Early March members weekend at CY

Here in North Wales it seems to have rained just about every day this year since January. Fortunately, we actually had a sunny day last Saturday, on a weekend on which our hut at Cae Ysgubor was booked specifically as a “Members’ Weekend”. So, here is a taster of what we got up to…

Some of the mountain biking trails at Coed-y-Brenin

We headed out to the Coed-y-Brenin forest park so that the grown-ups could get out on the mountain-biking trails. Hut-warden Roger suggested that we based ourselves at Ty’n-y-Groes as it’s a quieter spot at the southern end of the trails, which proved a good choice. Roger took up his grand-parenting duties and headed off into the woodland with the little-ies, whilst the grown-ups took to the hills and burned off some calories and adrenalin.

The trails at Coed-y-Brenin are well route-marked and the surfaces are firm even after bad weather,

The Cae Ysgubor hut always feels like a welcome place to return to after a long day in the outdoors. Plenty of space. A decent shower. It works well as a base for a wide variety of activities, whatever the weather.

Sunday was a bit of a damp day. Back to Welsh weather normality! Well, there are ways of keeping up one’s cardio and step count without tackling summits, it seems….

Eventually, our CY visitors head homewards and (after a well earned siesta) it’s time to close off the day down by the estuary:

Fabulous LMC BBQ meet 5-7th September 2025

CY BBQ

A fine weekend at the LMC bunkhouse – where, despite wind and heavy showers on the Sunday, we drove up to Cwm Ystradllyn. After a leisurely coffee at the lovely farmhouse café (one of Rogers favourite places!) we walked down the old ‘streets’ through the ruined mine workers cottages and then along the old tramway to the main quarry which is very impressive. We then had to stop at the café again on our return for a cream tea before driving down to the old slate mill that processed the slate from 2 quarries. The whole enterprise unfortunately never made a profit so was closed down but left an incredible legacy which now has UNESCO status.
We drove down the amazing little road to Prenteg complete with grass and cows in the middle and some great hairpin bends…

Short upland circuit from Cae Ysgubor

On Thursday our Wales Hut warden led a local group on a fine short-ish upland circuit from the doorstep of Cae Ysgubor. It’s only a short stroll from our hut over to nearby Craflwyn Hall, from which there is a fine waymarked path which runs over to the foot of Dinas Emrys and then zig-zags gently up the adjacent valley, with some fine views of Moel Siabod and Nant Gwynant.

We never met a soul, (other than a group of three feral mountain goats!) The path eventually descends to meet the Watkin Path (a well-trodden Snowdon route), down to the car park at Pont Bethania. From there it’s just a short walk back to the hut along the shore of Llyn Dinas. Well worth doing next time you’re down at Cae Ysgubor.

Our Wales Bunkhouse gets new technology

Many of our members love to escape the hubub of modern Lancashire living to enjoy the adventure and quiet serenity of Snowdonia at Cae Ysgubor, our Beddgelert bunkhouse. Even so, in our ever-changing technological world, LMC is now able to provide access on site to both a reliable broadband service and a couple of electric vehicle charging points.

CY facilities

(Hut visitors wishing to use the EV charge point will need to have their LMC Hut Keyfob enabled for this purpose, as this is used to give access to the charger. More info from the Cae Ysgubor hut warden).
